In the 1960's, Kurokawa’s historic nō tradition, as theatre and festival, came under the spotlight of the Japanese public. Advertised as ‘secret nō of the snow country’ it soon became one of the most well-known and long-studied folk performing arts traditions. That a secluded village isolated by mountainous country around it should have developed and sustained a high cultural entertainment such as nō theatre and integrated it into Shinto shrine festivals, prompted considerable interest among folklore scholars, theatre researchers, politicians, and tourists alike. Even today Kurokawa nō continues to be regarded as an example of an earlier form of Japanese culture and folk tradition that essentially has been frozen in time over the course of many centuries. In this volume, the author provides a detailed record of the history and development of Kurokawa nō and the processes of its transmission over the generations. The author also examines its impact on the wider cultural life of Japan and its literary heritage, the travel industry, government policy and folklore traditions in Japan generally. Warenar : een nerveuze vrek die een geërfde pot met gouden munten angstvallig voor diefstal tracht te behoeden. Door zijn geveinsde armoede vermoedt niemand zijn rijkdom. Totdat zijn paniekerigheid en grenzeloze achterdocht hem fataal worden. Ziedaar het onderwerp van een van de meest succesvolle blijspelen uit onze zeventiende eeuw. P.C. Hooft en S. Coster zorgden in Warenar (1617) voor een hele reeks aan komische verwikkelingen en verpakten ze in de bloemrijke Amsterdamse volkstaal. Wanneer de dochter van vrek Warnar zwanger raakt en het vinden van een juiste huwelijkspartner voor het meisje de nodige problemen oplevert, leidt dit tot een aantal vermakelijke misverstanden. Het verhaal, de personages en hun karaktertrekken werden ontleend aan een Latijns stuk uit de Oudheid. Maar de auteurs hebben er door allerlei aanpassingen en eigen vondsten een oer-Hollands stuk van gemaakt, dat in het Amsterdam van de vroege zeventiende eeuw speelt en daar veelvuldig op het toneel werd gebracht. Voorgewende armoede, een opgedrongen huwelijk, een wantrouwige baas en een goedgebekte dienstmeid, het weinig verhullende commentaar van een kok en zijn maatje, bedreigingen en scheldpartijen, een nachtelijk avontuur op het Ellendige Kerkhof nabij de Nieuwe Kerk, en uiteraard een goede afloop zijn de ingrediënten van dit meesterlijke blijspel uit de Gouden Eeuw.
